Penetrant testing is used to detect surface breaking defects in ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The penetrant dye liquid is applied to the surface and gets sucked into cracks in the material due to capillary action. After cleaning the residue, a developer is applied which uses reverse capillary action to suck the dye out of possible cracks showing clear indications of otherwise invisible discontinuities.
