Industrial radiographic testing (RT) is commonly used to inspect welds, steel structures and industrial components. Recently, MME Group applied the same technology for a very different purpose: examining the spinal column of farmed fish.
Young fish have skeletons primarily composed of cartilage, which gradually develops into bone as they mature. Conventional veterinary radiography has limited ability to visualise cartilage because it is relatively soft tissue. MME's industrial radiography equipment offers greater flexibility in adjusting X-ray parameters, making it possible to investigate whether this technology could effectively visualise the transition from cartilage to bone.
Industrial radiographic testing (RT) enabled detailed imaging of the fish vertebrae. The resulting images and NDT report provide The Kingfish Company with valuable information to analyse skeletal development and to assess the potential influence of nutrition and environmental conditions on this process.
Applying NDT expertise beyond traditional industries
For MME Group, this was far from a routine inspection. While industrial radiography is typically used for inspecting welds, steel structures and industrial components, this project required a completely different application of the same technology.
